Start with Your Own Routines

Strong classroom routines start with you. Creating reliable personal routines will help you begin each day grounded, calm and ready to lead. This article shares seven morning routine ideas that take 10 minutes or less, and this one creating a daily flow and using technology to set yourself up for smooth, successful schools days.

Structure Your Environment for Emotional Regulation

A well-structured classroom environment gives students, especially those who have experienced trauma, the security they need to learn and connect. Use this free Classroom Routines Planning Sheet, excerpted from the BELONG Partners Pacing Guide, to help plan routines around transtion and safety, community building, and expanding resiliency windows. Consider incorporating breathing techniquescalming spaces, utilizing self-regulation cards, and taking regular brain breaks to these routines to foster a trauma-informed space where every student can thrive.

Develop a Stress Management Plan

As an educator, your wellbeing is the foundation for everything you do. Vicarious trauma, and ongoing stress are real, so create a realistic plan that helps you recharge and sustain your energy. Self-care looks different for everyone, what matters is finding a routine that works for you and sticking with it.

Create Regular Check-ins with Colleagues

Connection with co-workers strengthens your support network and builds a sense of shared purpose. Scheduling regular connection time allows us to work more efficiently and effectively. Share ideas and learn from one another. We are social beings, and making time for meaningful check-ins helps develop relationships, deepen trust, and strengthen the whole school community.

Co-create Routines with Students

Routines are most effective when students help shape them. Invite their voices into the process.  Clearly communicate expectations and build buy-in so routines are meaningful and relevant. Here are some tips on involving students in the process of co-creating classroom norms that stick.

Starting the school year with strong, intentional routines takes effort, but it pays off in engagement, connection, and joy.
