Supporting Teen Reading Coaches and younger readers through relationship-centered practice
We are proud to have launched a year-long partnership with Team Read, an organization that empowers teens as literacy tutors for elementary students. Our two organizations are grounded in shared values, and a commitment to equity, literacy, and youth leadership. Team Read invited BELONG Partners to lead a series of workshops for staff and Teen Reading Coaches that strengthen relationship-centered, trauma-responsive practices.

Our collaboration began with listening. We met with the teen coaches to co-design learning that reflected their real experiences and needs. In our first virtual session, more than 100 staff and coaches came together to build community.
They explored the impact of trauma on learning, and practiced concrete strategies to support the students they tutor.
Two additional workshops will reach approximately 200 more coaches, alongside in-person coaching at Lakeridge and Campbell Hill elementary schools in Renton, and Thorndyke and Cascade View elementary schools in Tukwila. We are inspired by Team Read’s strong existing supports and view this partnership as a true exchange—sharing tools, learning from their proven model, and deepening impact together.

Team Read’s thoughtful design, relationship-centered practices, and focus on social-emotional growth ensure that young readers not only strengthen their reading skills but also develop a stronger sense of belonging in their school community. As the partnership continues, we will provide ongoing professional development and hands-on coaching, strengthening teen leadership while supporting younger readers to feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.
